NAVAHO RESTORATION PROJECT

The Navaho XSM-64 currently displayed at the South Gate of Cape Canaveral AFS was the Air Force Space and Missile Museum's first major restoration project of a launch vehicle or missile.  The Navaho was donated to the museum by the Brevard County School Board on August 18, 1964.  Records indicate that the missile was originally displayed in front of the Clearlake Junior High School administrative offices in Cocoa, Florida, and was mounted horizontally without a booster or engines.  The booster section of the Navaho was later donated by the Florida Power and Light Cpmpany in 1967 and was then erected as one complete Navaho XSM-64 soon after in the rocket garden of the AFSMM.

The Navaho was removed from this museum display location in September 1996 and placed in Hangar C for restoration.  This work continued until the Navaho restoration was completed by corrosion specialist Keith Davidson of AirCorr Inc., Melbourne, Florida, and moved to its present location in March of 1999.
